The Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) is an innovative science education program that introduces secondary school students to the excitement of scientific discovery. ABE provides secondary school teachers with the loan of research-grade equipment, supplies, curriculum, and professional development at no cost.
ABE provides high-quality laboratory experiences that promote students’ interest in science and science careers, and is aligned with national and local curriculum standards. The program features a hands-on molecular biology curriculum that introduces students to the excitement of scientific discovery. Each year, nearly 90,000 students and nearly 1,500 science teachers participate and have the opportunity to explore the methods scientists use to create biotechnology medicines.
The program engages students in learning molecular biology using relevant curricula, tools, and techniques. Participating teachers receive a loaned kit (free of charge), with research-grade equipment and supplies that allow students to participate in advanced science laboratories. The hands-on ABE curriculum ties the laboratory experiences to the development of medicines, using technologies employed by the biotechnology industry in the discovery of human therapeutics. Students learn the use of recombinant DNA techniques and important molecular “tracers.”
Professional development for ABE teachers enables them to keep pace with scientific advances and technologies and to introduce their students to the latest scientific discoveries. Teachers and students alike experience the excitement of participating in cutting-edge science with significant real-world applications.
