In this unit, developed by ABE The Netherlands Andrea van Bruggen-van der Lugt, students explore the concept of protein folding through lab-based and web-based activities. They explore how a protein’s structure determines its function through the lens of the enzyme α-amylase. They use bioinformatics tools like the RCSB PDB 3D Viewer, study Christian B. Anfinsen’s experiment, and perform a hands-on investigation to test whether denatured α-amylase can refold and regain its active properties.
