Luz Hernandez is a first-generation college student and is a strong advocate of the community college system, having attended Cerritos Community College in the Los Angeles area. She then transferred to Cal Poly Pomona for her bachelor’s in science degree. She is currently taking evening classes to prepare for her master's degree.

Luz serves as the site coordinator and lab technician at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) and was recently promoted to senior ABE lab technician/site coordinator. Her duties have expanded to include developing online modules using LabXchange and providing program expertise to ABE LA site staff. Luz also coordinates the marketing and promotion for ABE LA, including website updates, social media posts, and PDI and event flyers, and she is the lead editor and writer for the ABE LA newsletter.

Luz plans to act as STEM connector and community outreach liaison, which will help her to advance culturally responsive ABE programming. As part of this effort, Luz is also working on translating the ABE LA student protocol checklists to Spanish to broaden the scope of their use and to make them available to multilingual students in California. Luz is committed to enhancing scientific literacy within underrepresented STEM communities via effective science communication and resource sharing.
